Inauguration of U.S-Turkish Diplomatic History Exhibit in Adana July 9, 2008 -- On July 9, Principal Officer Eric Green opened the photography exhibit "Between Friends – Turkish American Diplomatic Relations 1923-2007" at Adana’s renowned cultural center, the Tarihi Kiz Lisesi. The U.S.-Mission-created exhibit, comprised of 48 photographs, displays 84 years of bilateral partnership from Ataturk and U.S. Ambassador Grew to President George W. Bush with Prime Minister Erdogan. Among the photos are several featuring Turkish President Demirel with Vice President Johnson and Presidents Ford, George H.W. Bush, and Clinton. The exhibition showcases the long friendship the United States and Turkey, and emphasizes that our bilateral ties remain deep and unbending. U.S. Consulate Adana Celebrates American Independence Day July 1, 2008 -- Ambassador Ross Wilson and Principal Officer Eric Green presided over the opening of Independence Day celebrations at U.S. Consulate Adana. Addressing a crowd of over 400 Turkish and American citizens, Ambassador Wilson quoted the American Declaration of Independence, and tied the strong U.S.-Turkish friendship to common values and a commitment to defend our way of life. USAFE Clarinet Quartet Enthralls Children at Adana Handicapped Center July 1, 2008 -- The USAFE Clarinet Quartet, in town to perform at the Consulate’s Independence Day reception, gave a concert for handicapped children at the Can Kids Education Protection and Life Foundation School. To the delight of the children, the quartet played several different kinds of music, and demonstrated how reed instruments work. The Quartet received thunderous applause from the children. Outreach to the special needs community by U.S. Consulate Adana is ongoing; this event follows on the heels of a two-week therapeutic program for the handicapped in southeastern Turkey.

Ambassador Wilson in Kahramanmaras June 24, 2008 -- On June 24, Ambassador Ross Wilson and Principal Officer Eric Green took part in the official opening of American Roadside Architechture, an exhibit sponsored by the U.S. Embassy with the support of the Turkish Ministry of Culture, and the Kahramanmaras Governorship, Municipality and Chamber of Commerce and Industry. The collection of 56 prints is a reflection of more than 25 years of work by architecture historian John Margolies, who traveled over 160,000 kilometers to capture a unique era in American history. The exhibit will be on display at the Kahramanmaras Municipality’s Necip Fazil Kisakurek Hall June 24 - July 2.

Aziza Reaches Out to Special-Needs Children and Youth in Southeastern Turkey May 27- June 2, 2008 -- As part of a U.S. Mission program for the Turkish special needs community, Aziza, an American dancer, choreographer and educator, toured southeastern Turkish cities to inspire children and youth with special needs through an arts-in-education approach that emphasized inclusiveness. Aziza, in collaboration with Turkish NGOs, met with children and youth in Adana, Hatay, Kahramanmaras, Diyarbakir and Mardin provinces. Accompanied by her percussionist Ron McBee, Aziza, blended dancing, music and rhythm in her workshops to help participants explore unused physical capabilites, and created enjoyable learning experiences for both kids, their families and teachers.

Consulate Adana Staffs U.S. Mission Booth at 3rd Iraqi International Fair May 22-23, 2008 -- Consulate Adana decorated and staffed a booth at the 3rd Iraqi International Fair in Gaziantep May 22-23. Staff members distributed materials on U.S. foreign commercial activities, American history and culture, visas, and study in the United States. Media reports estimated that approximately 52,000 visitors came through the fair grounds that hosted over 400 exhibitors from 32 countries.

Principal Officer Eric Green Discusses Human Rights and Democracy with Local University Law Students: May 21, 2008 -- Adana PO Eric Green lectured before a group of law students at Cag University, touching on themes of international law, human rights, democracy and Iraq policy. The students’ law professor said having the opportunity to discuss issues of domestic and global importance with an American diplomat was a great experience.

Fulbright Professor Uses Founding Fathers To Emphasize U.S. and Turkish Similarities May 9, 2008 -- Professor Patrick Folk earned the widespread admiration of Adana audiences comprised of businesspeople, lawyers, teachers, and students in a unique historical presentation comparing American and Turkish founding fathers George Washington and Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. He also paralleled challenges both the United States and Turkey experienced in their struggles to become nation states and republics. Many listeners congratulated Dr. Folk on crafting such an innovative and original lecture, and encouraged him to develop the theme into a book. Adana Life magazine interviewed Dr. Folk and his wife, a Turkish-American professor of chemistry also on a Fulbright exchange, for the July 2008 issue.

Kids of Gundogdu Koleji give Ambassador Wilson a Hearty Welcome April 25, 2008 -- During his one-day trip to Adana, Ambassador Wilson donated English language materials and books on American culture and history to Gundogdu Koleji, a local school celebrated nationally for its high academic standards. The children were overjoyed to receive the Ambassador, and welcomed him with a theatrical skit followed by questions about his life, career, and hobbies. While in Adana, Ambassador Wilson also paid a courtesy call on Adana Governor Ilhan Atis, toured the historic Kiz Lisesi building, and visited the facilities of TEMSA, a local vehicle manufacturer..
Blues and Jazz Artists Bring Down the House in Mersin and Adana April 7- 8, 2008 -- The Consulate hosted two concerts by celebrated American blues vocalist Bettie Mae Fikes and her band -- George Johnson (percussion), Robert Watson (bass guitar), and Eugene Blacknell (keyboard) -- and famed Turkish blues guitarist Mehmet Ali Acet. Bettie Mae’s flawless vocals and vigor won over more than 750 audience members in Mersin and Adana while displaying U.S.-Turkish synergy at its finest, both on the stage and off as the Consulate held the concerts in collaboration with local partners dedicated to supporting the arts. This concert tour is being held in honor of the eminent Turkish-American Ahmet Ertegun, who was a giant in American music for several decades prior to his death in 2006. Sharing American Blues, one of Ertegun’s favorite genres, with a wider Turkish audience is a fitting way to honor his memory.
Adana Principal Officer Green is Keynote Speaker at Gaziantep Foundation School’s Annual English Conference April 5, 2008 -- Principal Officer Eric Green was the keynote speaker at Gaziantep Foundation School’s annual English-language teaching conference on April 5. At the end of the presentation, which featured a slide show on key moments captured on film over 85 years of U.S.-Turkish relations, audience members asked questions on U.S. history, culture, elections and current policy.
Veteran Journalist Deborah Potter Underscores in Two-Day Mersin-Adana Program: “A Free Press is the Oxygen of Democracy” March 19 - 20, 2008 -- With over 36 years of media experience, Ms. Deborah Potter captivated audiences in Adana and Mersin with presentations covering the basics of good journalism, universal standards of responsible reporting, media’s role in a democracy, the impact of online news and blogging, and future media trends.
Building Dreams: Visiting Fulbright Professor and Architect Inspires Adana-Mersin Students March 11, 2008 -- U.S. Fulbrighter Tarik Orgen, an architecture professor at Auburn University, inspired over 225 students and faculty at Mersin and Cukurova Universities with his lecture and slide show presentation on the “Rural Studio.” Rural Studio is Auburn’s internationally acclaimed program that teaches future architects about social responsibility and the benefit of involving communities in construction projects using recycled and renewable material. In Adana, Professor Orgen appeared live on Cukurova Television’s morning show, answering questions on his own journey from Istanbul to the United States 27 years ago and encouraging students, civil society, and government to expand their horizons when thinking about civil construction projects. Professor Orgen also spoke at the Chamber of Architects.

Ambassador Ross Wilson's Visit to Hatay February 07, 2008 -- Ambassador Ross Wilson visited Hatay province on February 7 for meetings with local leaders and to explore the region's historic sites. He paid calls on Governor Ahmet Kayhan and Antakya Mayor Mehmet Yeloglu and met with about 50 representatives of the Antakya Chamber of Commerce. He visited a number of sites, including the St. Peter's Grotto Church, the Habibi Naccar Mosque, the Hatay Archeological and Mosaics Museum and the Roman-era Titus-Vespasianus Tunnel at Samandag.

U.S. Consulate Adana Throws Grand Opening Reception for American Film Institute’s 20/20 Independent Film Festival January 22, 2008 The U.S. Consulate and local cultural partner AltinKoza sponsored the successful launch of Adana’s five-day American Film Institute’s 20/20 Independent Film Festival. The four featured films – “American Fork,” by American director Chris Bowman; “Faro, Goddess of the Water” by Malian director Salif Traoré; “Disappearances,” by American filmmaker Jay Craven, and “Cyrano Fernandez,” a Venezuelan-Spanish production by director Alberto Arvelo – represent the best of independent filmmaking. Directors Chris Bowman, from California, and Salif Traore, from Mali, accompanied their films, and discussed with audience members the many ways in which film promotes intercultural understanding.

Gaziantep University Hosts American Film Institute Director Chris Bowman For Afternoon Film Program: January 21, 2008 Gaziantep University students screened Chris Bowman’s film “American Fork” and stayed on to ask him questions about American society and culture, elements of independent filmmaking, and how American literature has inspired film ideas.

A Congressional Delegation Visited Adana and Ceyhan January 11-15, 2008 A congressional delegation led by House Armed Services Committee member Bill Shuster visited Adana, Istanbul and Ankara January 11-15. Other members of Congress in the delegation include Representative Jon Porter, Representative Phil English, and Representative Shelley Moore Capito. The delegation traveled to France, Azerbaijan and Turkey to discuss national security and energy issues as well as to build relationships with allies. In Turkey, they met with Turkish government officials to discuss critical bilateral issues including global energy security and the fight against the PKK.

American Voices Concert at Metropolitan Theater Hall in Adana December 08, 2007 The “American Voices” duet of Michael Parks Masterson and John Ferguson played to a packed house at the Adana Municipal Theater on Saturday, December 8. The concert was sponsored by the U.S. Consulate and was part of the 9th Annual Adana International Arts Festival. The program included classics from Broadway musicals such as South Pacific and Phantom of the Opera as well as piano solos by Ferguson featuring his interpretations of composers such as George Gershwin and Scott Joplin. Congressman Shays visits Diyarbakir and mardin November 27-28, 2007 Congressman Christopher Shays, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Connecticut, visited Diyarbakir, Habur Gate and Mardin November 27-28. During his visit, Congressman Shays met with Turkish government officials, representatives of non-governmental organizations, business leaders and members of the Syriac Christian community.

“Between Friends” Exhibit A Hit in Gaziantep November 19, 2007 - Gaziantep Adana Principal Officer Eric Green and Gaziantep Mayor Dr. Azim Guzelbey celebrated the opening of “Between Friends: Turkish-American Diplomatic Relations: 1923-2007,” a photographic exhibit covering important historical highlights of our shared history. Georgetown Professor speaks on 2008 U.S. Elections at Cukurova University
During his November 2 visit to Adana, Georgetown University Government Professor Clyde Wilcox, gave a one-hour lecture entitled "The 2008 American Elections" to an audience of fifty students and faculty members at the International Relations Department of Cukurova University. Wilcox provided comprehensive information on the main candidates participating in the upcoming U.S. elections and he discussed the issues dominating the current American political scene such as the Iraq war, health care and the environment. In the evening, Professor Wilcox spoke to 25 people at a lecture followed by a buffet dinner at the Principal Officer's Residence. [ See Photo Gallery ]

The “Living Bookshelf” Program Strikes a Successful Chord in Two Area SchoolsOctober 22 - 26, 2007Bruce D. Taylor, an arts-in-education consultant and founder of Arts for Anyone project, and, Mary Ann Ivan, a musical theatre director and composer, conducted programs in Adana and Tarsus the week of October 22. They were in Turkey under the sponsorship of the State Department's “Cultural Envoy” program. Mr. Taylor and Ms. Ivan held workshops with 5th graders at Adana Gundogdu School and with 7th graders at the Tarsus American High School to engage them in an artistic creation process called “The Living Bookshelf.” The students created new characters based on English books/stories they read in their classes and wrote lyrics about their characters’ personalities to create their own songs. In Taylor’s words, the goal of this exercise goes beyond arts and is intended to teach young people to “think, create and communicate.” [ See Photo Gallery ]

Adana's American Community Makes Ramazan DonationsOctober 10, 2007 The U.S. Consulate in Adana and Americans stationed at Incirlik Air Force Base donated clothes and toys to several charities in honor of Ramazan. Thanks to the generosity of these communities, over 30 boxes of donated items were provided to ÇAÇA of Diyarbakır (Çocuklar Aynı Çatı Altında), the Adana Street Children's Association, and the Adana Children's Home and the Seyhan Municipality Boys' Home, two local orphanages. This donation by the American community in Turkey serves to mark the holy month of Ramazan, a time for reflection and for serving others.

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Public Diplomacy Visits Adana and MersinSeptember 10, 2007 During her trip to the region, Deputy Assistant Secretary Colleen Graffy spoke with disadvantaged children who have achieved exellence in education with the generous support of the Adana Street Children Association. After visiting with the children, she presented books and educational CDs in Turkish and English for the Association’s library. Dr. Graffy also met with American and Turkish artists in Mersin, where Biennial panel discussions were held on September 11. [photo gallery]

A student leader from Dicle University visits the USIn July, Osman Solmaz participated in the five-week program “Study of the U.S. Institute for Student Leaders,” an intensive academic program designed to provide undergraduate student leaders with a deeper understanding of the United States while enhancing leadership and team-building skills. A total of 18 students from across Turkey were selected to participate in the program following an open competition earlier this spring. Osman, a student of Dicle University’s English Department in Diyarbakir, spent time in Washington D.C. and Rochester, New York’s Nazareth College. “The program was especially important to me because not only did I learn about the United States, but I also had a chance to meet with students from other parts of Turkey. I learned American people are really warm and friendly, and I made great friends from Nazareth College,” said Osman in a letter to the Consulate. “I was impressed to see a relief portrait of one of the greatest Ottoman Sultans, Suleiman the Magnificent, in the U.S. Capitol Building!” [ Photo Gallery ]

Independence Day celebrated in Adana July 03, 2007 In honor of the 231st Anniversary of the Independence of the United States of America, the U.S. Consulate Adana held a reception hosted by Consul Eric Green and Mrs. Erica J. Green. 300 guests attended the event. Following a ceremony that included the presentation of the Turkish and American flags by an Honor Guard and playing of the national anthems, the Consul made the following remarks: Welcome and good evening. From Mersin to Florida July 04, 2007 Nurdan Akiner, an assistant professor at the Journalism Department of Mersin University, is representing Turkey this summer at the United States Institute on Journalism and Media, which is being held at the University of Florida. Here she poses for a photo with four of her colleagues, who are from Rwanda, China, Russia and Macedonia while they enjoy a picnic during the Independence Day celebrations at the campus. Program participants come from 18 different countries and are focusing on the theme, "New Freedoms in Media: Teaching the Digital Journalism of Tomorrow." The program runs from June 10 to July 22 and includes four weeks in Gainesville, Florida, and two weeks of educational tours to Miami, Tampa, Orlando, New York, and Washington D.C., designed to expose the participants to America’s diversity and its varied media industry.

University of Delaware (UD) Women’s Basketball Group in Adana, Ceyhan and Mersin June 19, 2007 State Department sponsored “Anatolia Tour 2007,” a series of basketball clinics organized in collaboration with the Turkish Basketball Federation (TBF) and the University of Delaware. The first event was in Ankara on June 12 and the group then visited Kayseri and Nevsehir provinces, arriving in Adana on June 16 to share their experiences with Turkish girls basketball players. At each site visited in southern Turkey, balls, posters, and t-shirts were provided to participants, and, in Adana, the group donated two new outdoor basketball courts donated by the UD Alumni Association. "Reading Celebration" at Celil Cavusoglu Elementary School June 15, 2007 On June 15, Deputy Principal Officer Andrew Wilson attended a "Reading Celebration" at Celil Cavusoglu Elementary School in Dogankent, to make a donation on behalf of Ankara International Charities Committee (AICC) of 48 books for the school library and a new speaker system for the school multipurpose room. The overhead projecter seen at the top of the photograph was previously donated by the Consulate on behalf of AICC. Most Cavusoglu School students are from families of migrants from southeastern Turkey.
American Agricultural Counselor Hosts a Seminar on Biotechnology April 26, 2007 During a visit to Adana, Embassy Ankara Agricultural Counselor Ralph Gifford hosted a seminar on April 26 on biotechnology with the local branch of the farmers union. The following day he and Principal officer Eric Green met with Pan Tarim, Turkey’s leading exporter of organic produce. Together they also visited some of the Cukurova farmers who are now growing organic citrus for export to European markets. Pan Tarim’s Chairwoman, Zeynep Oztekin, visited the U.S. last summer under the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cochran Fellowship program.

American Visitors Help Local Scholars Hone English-Language Skills April 19-21, 2007 Christine Feak, a lecturer for at the English Languge Institute of the University of Michigan, joined English Language Officer Maria Snarski from the U.S. Embassy, to give a series of seminars for teaching staff and research assistants at Cukurova University in Adana to help them write articles in English for academic publication. Ms. Feak and members of the Cukurova University faculty will also give presentations in collaboration on "Shaping the Way We Teach" for teachers of the Turkish American Association.

Deputy Principal officer Meets With Students of Science High School in Elazig March 15, 2007 On March 15, Deputy Principal Officer Andrew Wilson made two presentations on "Education in America" to students at both Firat University and Karakaya Science High School in Elazig. About 200 univesity students and over 150 high school students attended the presentations. In lively exchanges following the presentations, students and faculty engaged Mr. Wilson on topics ranging from concerns about crosscultural communication to financial and entrance requirements for American universities.

Principal officer Green Meets With Representatives of Grameen MicroCredit project February 23, 2007 During a visit to Diyarbarkir on February 23 Principal Officer Eric Green met with representatives of the Grameen Micro-Credit project, which was originally established in Bangladesh and now has six branches in Turkey. Grameen’s clients are women who borrow small amounts of money to help finance entrepreneurial projects in handicrafts and services. Mr. Green joined Grameen’s Turkey project Director, Khan Chowdhury, at a weekly meeting with clients in a Diyarbakir neighborhood. The clients provided information on their businesses, which included hairdressing, sewing of clothes and food preparation.

Duende Quartet Performed At Cukurova University February 6, 2007 Consulate Adana sponsored a concert by the Duende Jazz Quartet on February 6 at Cukurova Univesity’s Mithat Ozsan Hall. About 400 guests and jazz enthusiasts filled the house to enjoy the Quartet’s Latin jazz, which is in the style of Mongo Santamaria, Cal Tjader and Willie Bobo with a nod to the Blue Note sound of the 60’s. The guests, who included Adana Mayor Aytac Durak and Cukurova Rector Alper Akinoglu, joined the band for a post-concert reception. Under the auspices of the Department of State, Duende Quartet was chosen by Jazz at Lincoln Center to participate in the Rhythm Road: American Music Abroad program. The group also conducted a master class jazz workshop at Cukurova University on February 7. See the Photo Gallery

deputy Principal Officer Visits Hasankeyf in Batman December 7, 2006 During a recent trip to the southeast, Deputy Principal Officer Andrew Wilson visited with Hasankeyf Mayor Abdulvahap Kusen in the mayor’s cave office, located in an ancient cave complex near the city center, where the mayor’s main office is located. Hasankeyf is one of the most ancient settlements in southeastern Turkey, with historical remnants of major importance dating from over 5000 years ago. These historical sites include mosques, medreses, turbes, tombs, bridges, palaces and churches. See Photo Gallery

Consul Green Visits Celil Cavusoglu Primary School at Dogankent Beldesi November 21, 2006 Consul Eric F. Green went to Dogankent Beldesi in Adana to visit Celil Cavusoglu Primary School, the biggest school in a small township where parents, most of whom are working as seasonal agricultural workers, are sending their children. American Artist to Exhibit in Adana December 6- 12, 2006 Works by American artist Laura Leiden was on display as part of the Travelling Weave exhibit at Haci Omer Sabanci Devlet Guzel Sanatlar Galerisi (State Fine Arts Gallery), December 6-12 in Adana. History Professor from the u.s. visits Cukurova University On October 30, Dr. Carl J. Guarnari, Professor of History at Saint Mary’s College of California, visited Adana and presented a lecture to 120 students and faculty at Cukurova University entitled “Globalization, Mass Culture and Anti-Americanism: A Historical Perspective.” Professor Guarnari also presented an evening lecture at the Principal Officer’s Residence to 40 guests from Adana and Mersin. The lectures were well-received and sparked lively discussions about the effects of globalization and Americanization on mass culture...

Volleyball Diplomacy: Friendship Match Between Incirlik High School and Tarsus American College October 30, 2006 On October 30, American student boys and girls volleyball teams from Incirlik High School on Incirlik air base traveled to Tarsus American College to participate in a friendship volleyball match as part of ongoing efforts by both schools to increase people-to-people and sporting contacts between Turkish and American students. Players on both sides played hard and demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship. At the end of the tournament, players from Incirlik High School presented bags of Halloween candy to the Tarsus American College players as a way to thank them for hosting the tournament, and to share a bit of American culture with their new Turkish friends....

Consul Green's Visit to Dicle University During the last week of September, Principal Officer Eric Green and Embassy Ankara's Political Counselor Janice Weiner visited Diyarbakir, Batman and Bingol in southeast Turkey. On September 27 they met with students and faculty at Dicle University, where they also visited Dicle's Prosthesis Center, which designs artificial limbs for people throughout the region, including many who have been victims of land-mines.

Remembering September 11 On Monday, Adana's consulate staff marked the fifth anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States by observing a moment of silence. In addition, Principal Officer Eric Green visited two organizations representing families of Turkish security forces killed, to express solidarity with the Turkish people, who continue to suffer from on-going attacks by violent extremists. In a news article, Ambassador Ross Wilson wrote that “on this September 11, Americans mourn their loss of five years ago and mourn all victims of terrorism. We will continue to confront ideologies of hate, to work for the defeat of our enemies, and to foster hope and opportunity for our children. I believe that America and Turkey are together, and we will succeed.”

Ambassador Ross Wilson visits Mersin Ambassador Ross Wilson visited Mersin on August 31 to thank people who assisted during the evacuation of American Citizens from Lebanon in July. Ambassador Wilson met with Governor Aksoy, Mayor Ozcan as well as representatives of the security services, the Mersin port and the Red Crescent. The Ambassador also toured the ancient city of Tarsus, visiting a Roman road which is believed to be 2100 years old and the Ulu Mosque, an 11th century structure that was originally a church. US Ambassador Ross Wilson's First official visit to Southeastern Turkey US Ambassador Ross Wilson, made an official visit to Gaziantep and Adana provinces March 6-8. At a press event held on March 7 in Adana during his visit, Ambassador Wilson said, "I thought it was very important in my first several months to get to both Istanbul and to Adana, where we have consulates that demonstrate America’s interests here. My purposes are really three: First, to introduce myself to the people and to the leaders of this region; second, to listen and to learn from the local authorities and business leaders and others that I meet with; and third, to see something of Turkey other than Ankara and Istanbul.
